Oh, the sights to see in DC - can life get any better?

We went sightseeing with our friend Kim on one of the coldest days of the season here in DC.  There will be no selfies posted because Donna's nose was running constantly!  (Ew! TMI!)  It was good to see Kim for the first time in years.  Donna met Kim while working on an assignment with the Federal Reserve Board of Governors here in DC more than 10 years ago.  She was and is a joy to spend time with!  We visited the National Cathedral and the National Zoo.

The Washington National Cathedral's official name is the Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul and is Episcopalian. It took 83 years to complete, has 215 stained glass windows, 288 angels, 112 gargoyles, and a number of grotesques.  The gargoyles act as waterspouts to divert rain away from the Cathedral's walls.  A Darth Vader grotesque was added to the building in 1986 as one of the winning entries in the National Geographic World magazine contest. More than 220 people are interred in the Cathedral including Woodrow Wilson and Helen Keller.

Not many animals were outside at the National Zoo because it was so cold.....brrrrr!
This chimp was inside and had fun with his audience.

This week we went to Georgetown which has its own history.  It was chilly again - colder than normal for DC.  We went from a warmer than usual December to a colder than usual January.  Go figure!

Georgetown University was founded in 1789 and is the oldest Catholic school of higher education in the US.

There is a Jesuit cemetery within the university's grounds.
President John F Kennedy lived in Georgetown while serving as Massachusetts senator.  Here are two of the houses in which he resided.

He often attended Holy Trinity Catholic Church.

He reportedly proposed to Jackie at Martin's Tavern.
The Old Stone House is the oldest unchanged building in DC.  It is also Washington's last pre-revolutionary colonial building on its original foundation.  They don't make 'em like they used to!
We capped off the day with a burger and fries at Good Stuff Eatery before heading to an ice cream shop.  Sorry, the picture is a little blurry.  We didn't want you to think we stopped eating ice cream....even if it is January!

We're behind on posting about our treks and happenings, so look for more to come soon.

Hope you're enjoying the NFL playoffs as much as we are!
