And our summer retreat was........

Ding, ding, ding......for the third time ------Wausau, WI!!!  We love it there with all of the summer activities.  We've done some of the same things as in previous years and actually found new things to do.

Whitewater Park - freestyle kayaking and canoeing.  This year the Midwest and National Championships were held here.

The Ironbull Solstice race up Rib Mountain - we entered the non-competitive division - (thank goodness)!  The trail is billed as the steepest mile in the Midwest (for what that's worth) - 700 feet elevation gain in a mile with inclines at times of over 20%.  The kicker for Donna (with a fear of heights) was having to climb the observation tower at the top in order to collect our medal.
Donna has since climbed the tower four more times!
Hiked up the mountain's regular trails at least three or four times per week.  Enjoyed the views and the mushroom sightings.  Don likes to throw rocks in the little pond at the quarry.

The July 4th parade in Tomahawk, WI
Attended free concerts on the square and in the town park with family.

Went to antique car and tractor shows

Polka bands are big at some of the festivals.
Picked strawberries, blueberries, cherries, and red, purple, golden, and black raspberries.
Drove to several cheese factories.  There's nothing better than that first squeak of fresh cheese curds.  Yummy!
Bought veggies, fruit, and flowers at the farmer's market - one of the best we've been to.
Went to the Wausau Air Show
And the Balloon Festival
Still amazed at the talent for the annual Wausau Chalkfest!  Wow!

Wisconsin produces the most ginseng in the USA.
Our son Conor and grandson Eli visited this summer.  Conor and grandson Isaac visited last summer.  It was Don's and Eli's first time to see a demolition derby.  This year, they added a kids derby - quite fun to watch.

Went to a Wausau Woodchucks baseball game.

Hiked at Dells of the Eau Claire
And Grandfather Falls

Whew!  There was so much to do!  We left Wausau at the end of August.  We'll do one more blog post of the foods we ate while there.

  1. Looks like a lot of summer fun activities. I noticed Conor and perhaps his son in the photos. Great they could come!
