Don and I quickly found out what we would hike a mountain for..... wild blueberries, that's what. More to come on that later.
Nine whole days in Concord, NH and not sure what we were going to do with the time..... We weren't unsure for long. Hiking, searching for the best ice cream in town, and visiting with Don's sister Wendy and her husband Don kept us busy, thank you very much!
We're so glad that we learned about the website - alltrails.com. We found gorgeous and challenging hikes in each location where we have landed. This stop we hit pay dirt! In Epsom Town Forest, we hiked to Neville Peak and stumbled upon the largest patch of wild blueberries we have ever seen. Oh, my gosh! It was so refreshing to eat handfuls of these gems after hiking up to Neville Peak in the heat wave that hit the northeast this week. We enjoyed it so much we just had to hike to the peak two more times. One of the days, we added a quick jaunt over to Nottingham Mountain peak then back to Neville to eat even more blueberries.
While not as big as the ones you find in the grocery store, they were much tastier!
Almost stepped on this cute little guy while hiking. It's known as a red eft, the land dwelling juvenile stage of the eastern newt amphibian. Found out later that it's poisonous to eat....glad we found the wild blueberries first.
We also hiked Oak Hill Tower Trail and connecting loops a few times as well. That's Don most of the way up the steps wearing a purple shirt.
Went to Hampton Beach, which is along New Hampshire coast. Interesting fact: New Hampshire has only 18 miles of coast. Of course, we chose one of the hottest days of the trip. Harry and Hermione got no further than the entry point. They don't do well if they get wet. Lol!
View of the beach when we first arrived at 10 am.
View of the beach two hours later. Guess there were others who escaped the heat at the beach too!
The water was very cold and refreshing.
Seeking the best ice cream in town has become a new hobby. We tried Arnie's Place after reading about it in the Fodor's Travel Guide. Guess our expectations were too high. Went to Frekey's Dairy Freeze twice and enjoyed the ice cream much more. Found out they carry Gifford's ice cream (the brand we raved about in Bangor, ME).
We met Don's sister Wendy and brother in law Don in Nashua, NH halfway between us in Concord, NH and them in Concord, MA. Had a great time eating, catching up on the news, and of course laughing! Wish the time didn't pass so fast! It was great to see Wendy and Don!
Next stop - back to New York to visit Don's Mom in Johnson City.
Looks like you guys are having a fantastic time!
